Graduation Speech: The Gettysburg Address

When making a decision whether it is out of impulse or vigilant thinking, do most people take a step back and reevaluate how it would affect others? Abraham Lincoln did not impetuously decide to give The Gettysburg Address, one of the most notorious speeches in history, without thinking how his words were going to precisely impact his audience. To be a leader it is indisputable that in order to act right, one must think right. As a great leader, one should never be condescending to others. I strongly believe in the saying, “treat others the way you want to be treated.” I learned to not patronize anyone ever since my mother and I packed our bags to move from Vietnam to America. I had to start from scratch including making new friends to learning a whole new language. Whoever thinks that coming to a foreign country, trying to assimilate to an unfamiliar culture was easy as pie, they do not know how strenuous it truly is. It is crystal clear that no one is going to put their faith in a liar. Lincoln was called “Honest Abe” for a reason. Lincoln directly stated that he will reunite America during the Civil War, he did not fritter away his time being idle. He made it happen. I aspire to be a dependable leader like Lincoln. When it was time for Interactors to vote for who they wanted for officers, I ran for Treasurer. I wrote my speech diligently and paused to think, “Is it the Truth?” It was extremely important to make sure that what I was saying wasn’t a bunch of baloney. One of the promises that I made for Interact as Treasurer was to ensure that we would have enough money that can fund activities or services that we would like to do.
