A preliminary hearing happens next which means there is a criminal hearing to see if there is enough evidence to indict the person who has been accused of the crime. If there is enough evidence, the case will go to the grand-jury for review or information will be filed in the trial court. The grand jury is usually 23 people who sit permanently for at least one month and they decide if indictments should be issued. If the grand jury does decide that there is strong evidence to hold the suspect for trial, it returns a bill of indictment, which is a true bill and this charges the suspect with a particular crime.
