My Grandmother Words
As a young kid from headstart on up to about middle school, I was the kid who struggled in almost anything. It could have been something as simple as riding a bicycle for the first time. I use to get laughed at, and teased at for anything I did incorrectly. But, thanks to my grandmother she was patient, and willing to help me as the years went by. I learned a lot from my grandmother, until this day I am still learning so much from her.
I can still hear my grandmother voice saying, “You are a smart, beautiful, and black young lady, who can achieve anything as long as you’re open minded and committed to it”. My grandmother would talk or should I say “preach” to me and my cousin for (hours which it seemed like.) She would tell us “I am only telling you this, because I love you, care about you, and want the best for you in life”. My grandmother also expressed clearly how education is important. Education is the main key to success in life, because without education you will not be able to afford the things in life that you need and want. I’ve even experienced seeing elderly on social security, barley enough to make it through the next month, due to the fact that they have no education or even a little education. I remember how my grandmother use to sit down with me after school for a study session, because the teacher told her I was behind the rest of the kids in math and reading. I was laughed at, and picked on. I was a bit behind at learning and catching on than the other kids. That didn’t stop me though I continued to work hard with the help of my grandmother by my side. Also listening to her encouraging words that I took in as much as possible.
When I realized I wasn’t a fast learner or I worked a bit slower than others, again there was my grandmother telling me not to give up, and that she will be there for me whenever I needed her to be. That’s when she insisted on having study sessions after school. Even during the weekends we will practice more reading at the library and doing math to help me improve my grades. After them long hours of study sessions I was able to be on the same track as the others in my class. Not only did my grandmother encourage me; I had a lot of encouragement from my church family also. They told me to keep praying and that Jesus will give me the strength and ability to make it through and able to understand the school work.
Every day when I woke up to attend school I would feel very excited and ready to learn. I felt that way because of my grandmother and my church family. With their encouraging words they have stored into my head having me thinking I can do anything I put my mind to, and to never ever give up.
I could go on forever on how my grandmother would preach to me about the importance of education, and perseverance. Also to make something of myself in life to be a very successful young lady in the future. My grandmother is the best person to talk to for encouragement and advice about anything. She is full of wisdom, has seen what it’s like in this world in order for her to encourage me to be a successful black young lady. Every time my grandmother gives me an word of encouragement, I listen and make sure I understand what she is telling me. I do this, because, I want to set an example for my own kids
