The study of communication between instructors and students in any given scenario can be heavily dependent on face to face interaction and written text. This does not differ within the dance community and that is why I aim to study the specific ways in which dance instructors communicate with their students through a Facebook account as well as through face to face interaction. The focus of my research is directly related to the goal of Elsa Pardo Dance Center where they strive to “create beautiful dancers in every single student,” as stated on their Facebook page. Essentially, the rhetorical situation is the events that occur and contribute to communication. The Facebook page is an example of a rhetorical situation where the teachers are engaging with their students to present necessary information. One of the four components of Grant-Davie’s rhetorical situation, is the exigence, defined as “the matter and motivation of the discourse”, taking into to consideration, “what the discourse is about, why it is needed, and what it should accomplish” (351). The exigence is what drives the initiation of a specific conversation. The Facebook page is clearly about the dance studio, and it is necessary to keep all of the members in the community informed on any events. Constraints are factors, not related to the audience or rhetor that influence the discourse. Assets are constraints that help the purpose of the discourse and liabilities are those that can hurt the purpose of the discourse. Because of the nature of a Facebook page, an asset that presents itself is the ability for the rhetor to include links and photos to help further the understanding of the post. Another asset is that the rhetor can also tag any members that they want to reference specifically in a post, maximizing the chance that those tagged will see the
