The book starts out from the point of view of death. He explains that he saw the book thief three times, once on a train, another time when a plane crashes, and lastly when a bomb strikes. Death then goes on to tell the story. He starts by telling about the train and how Liesel's brother suddenly died on the train. It then jumps ahead to his burial where the gravedigger drops a book a Liesel steals it. They then get back on the train and go to a town called Molching. This is where she will be raised by her foster parents, Hans, and Rosa Hubermann. She didn’t get along with them, but she eventually warmed up to Hans. He taught her how to roll cigarettes and he would comfort her when she had nightmares each night about her brother. She eventually gets used to living there and meets her neighbor Rudy. He is obsessed with athlete Jesse Owens and he has a slight crush on Liesel and wants her to kiss him. Rudy shows Liesel around town and explains some of the things going on in the town. …show more content…
Once she turns 10 she is enrolled in Hitler's Youth where she will learn to heil Hitler, or, in other words, look up to him and honor him. Rosa starts taking Liesel with her as she collects laundry from the neighbors for her job. Eventually, Liesel is collecting and delivering the Laundry
