2011- 2017 were terrible years for the wolves. In Idaho and Montana alone hundreds of gray wolves were slaughtered and maimed in cruel traps during hunting season. Hunters and trappers have killed over 4000 gray wolves in the lower 48 states since they were removed from the endangered species list in 2011. For over 40 years, the Gray Wolf was a protected species under the Endangered Species Act; but, this protection was removed by legislative rider in 2011. Wolves are facing imminent extinction, at the hands of government Officials, that continually choose the side of Money instead of a Healthy Environment.

When wolves kill it is good for the soil. A 2009 study in Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park found that wolf-killed elk carcasses dramatically enhanced levels of nitrogen and other nutrients in the soil.

Wolf kills benefit three times more species than human hunting kills. The skeleton of a bull elk can be picked clean by wolves and scavengers in less than five days. Scavengers thrive when wolves are around. The species that help themselves to wolves’ leftovers include ravens, magpies, wolverines, bald eagles, golden eagles, three weasel species, mink, lynx, cougar, grizzly bear, chickadees, masked shrew, great gray owl, and more than 445 species of beetle.

Wolves help protect against climate change. Milder winters, a product of climate change, have led to fewer elk deaths. This leaves scavengers like coyotes and ravens scrambling for food, but the problem is far less pervasive in areas where wolves were around to hunt elk.

Wolves help keep populations in check and make sure they don’t grow too rapidly. Without the wolves, the coyotes begin to thrive as well. Even though the coyotes don’t have as much competition for food they are unable to keep the elk population down by
