While reading the 'Great Baby Einstein Scam' written by Mira Jacob there was the unveiling of marketing to children that I wasn't looking at. As a parent even I didn't notice that they were looking to market toward the children when it came to such things as Baby Einstein. In some things it is quite obvious - the dolls for girls and the trucks for boys, the recent acceptance of gender neutral things. While I understand that there are many things that need to be marketed toward children (this helps us understand what appeals to our children!) but there are some things that shouldn't be... and actually aren't. It's actually quite ingenious! The fact that someone has mastered what humans fear when it comes to the growth of their children was a key factor in the wish to believe that these videos were miracles for their little ones. We humans wish for nothing but our children to have it better than we did which creates the atmosphere of growth: so when preying upon our lack of time (and possibly guilt over working long hours and having too many chores) or our anxiety over our children's performance in school and life this creates the perfect atmosphere. The idea of the Toulmin’s model is a great one. I understood a lot about what I was reading when looking for the key details and searching for answers helped me to deepen my understanding of the subject that was being lain out. Initially I agreed with the statements made and understood where they were coming from and I honestly still agree to some degree although I’ll not agree fully with the implied “marketing toward children is bad” tone in the story. The model was a great tool that allowed me to create a complete analysis of the very simple and quite short essay that we were presented
