The Great Barrier Reef provides many benefits for humans. According to iyor2018.org, “Coral reefs ...have a global estimated value of $2.3 trillion per year… this includes tourism and Holley 2 food.” The reef is worth $56 billion to our economy. The economic value of the reef comes from tourism and fishing. The reef make $5.2 billion annually just due to tourism. Tourism of the reef helps the economy in a huge way. The activities at the reef, such as boating, SCUBA diving, and fishing, cost money at the reef. The reef is a huge tourist attraction to the world. The more people that come to the reef, the more money they are making. Fishing provides fisheries all over the world with …show more content…
There are four overarching threats to the reef. They are climate change, poor water quality, coastal development, and overfishing (barrierreef.org). All of these threats relate to human activity. Climate change is caused by putting carbon dioxide and other harmful chemicals back into the atmosphere (climate.nasa.gov).This can happen by burning fossil fuels or, simply, just by using a non-electric car. Both of these activities are performed by humans. Climate change can lead to coral bleaching and extreme weather. These can lead to the coral not being able to support the species the death of the coral reef. Poor water quality is caused by runoff of pollutants and other fatal chemicals into the ocean. Runoff happens when it rains, snows, etc. Then the water goes into the water and takes all of the litter and garbage with it. The trash blocks the sunlight that the coral reefs need. The chemicals in the water effect how the organisms grow and perform bodily functions (coral.org). The littering is all caused by humans and it can, easily, be stopped. Coastal Development is another major threat to the biodiversity of The Great Barrier Reef. Coastal Development affects the ecosystems on the coast. More people produce more litter and runoff, which leads to pour water quality. It is people who build buildings and invade the animals space (barrierreef.org). According to (worldwildlife.org), “Overfishing …show more content…
We will work with local electric car companies to try to reduce prices 30% on Earth Day. In doing so, companies will receive a 23% tax break. On Earth Day, all companies will allow their employees to see a 30 minute seminar on the impact of electrical cars. The seminar will be lead by professionals who are reliable and educated on the topic. We will also change all Australian buses to electric models. Electric vehicles are proven to be much more ecofriendly than regular gasoline using cars. The number one reason why people don’t buy electric cars is because of how expensive they are. When more people buy these cars, the amount of gasoline using cars will go down. The gasoline using cars put a lot of pollution and carbon dioxide into the air. The carbon dioxide and pollution lead to climate change and coral bleaching. The reef will flourish without all of this pollution. Teaching people about the coral reef will make them more educated on how their every move could affect thes corals in a harmful way. Hopefully, it will make these people more cautious about their everyday lives. The seminar might convince the people that electric cars are better for the environment. This could make people think about investing in an electric cars. We hope that we can do this every year on Earth Day to continually improve the health of the coral reef. Our conservation will help the Great Barrier
