When one thinks of Greek mythology, Zeus and Hercules come into mind. They’re the most influential Greek deities with stories of triumph over evil forces. One such tale of triumph is the Labours of Hercules. Twelve episodes of labours in which Hercules completed in request of king Eurystheus. In total there are twelve Greek gods and goddess that ruled the universe from Mount Olympus. Each one of them symbolized a specific trait. Athena is the goddess of wisdom, which came into play when she helped out Hercules and Odysseus. Nike is the winged goddess of victory. The Greeks are well known for their construction of temples in dedication to their gods. Although they had many gods to worship they specifically honored Athena and Nike with a temple symbolizing their admiration for the goddess. …show more content…
The architect in charge of constructing the temple was Callicrates. The senates commissioned Callicrates in building a temple for Athena Nike (Wingless Victory). Before hand, Callicrates was the architect of the Parthenon. It was the largest Doric temple on the Greek mainland. During the sixth century B.C also known as the archaic period, a cult of Athena Nike was established. The cult constructed a small temple on site where the Callicrates temple was to be built. At first the temple was to be made from Pentellic marble but delays forced Callicrates to use Poros limestone and faced with marble. The harder Poros limestone was introduced from Egypt.
