Gregory Crenshaw Intersectionality Summary

Kimberly Crenshaw begins her Ted talk by introducing something new. She says everyone who can stand up please stand; she’s going to name, names, and if you don’t recognize any of the names or you can’t tell her anything about the person she named then sit down. The last person standing will tell her what they know. At the end of the exercise most people had sat down. The first names were African-American men who were killed by police officers two and a half years ago, while the second group of names were killed in the past two years and the only thing that distinguishes both groups are gender. Crenshaw says about intersectionality, is that we don’t think of women being killed by police force because we are not framed to do so. Frames, for us, is portrayed through the media, politicians, etc.; however, reporters don’t lead with those cases, politicians are not encouraged or demanded to talk about them. She said that she began using the term intersectionality; it was the fact that many of our social justice problems like racism and sexism are overlapping creating multiple levels of social injustice. …show more content…
She says that those who have privilege are often blind to it. But, just because discrimination doesn’t happen to you personally, doesn’t mean you cannot have a part in eliminating it. This relates to intersectionality that Crenshaw mentioned because we shape what people see and people of the dominant culture do not feel they share the same discrimination as the people of minor culture. To help change the society, all sides must be willing to change. Those who have more privilege must be willing to give some up to allow others to improve and succeed, we must get rid of being in our comfort
