Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, chronicles the life of Elphaba Thropp, an outspoken, green-skinned Munchkinlander as she more famously becomes “The Wicked Witch of the West”. The story takes place in the fictionally abstract world of Oz that posses many similarities to nineteenth-century England.
In Rush Margins, Munchkinland, Frex and Melena Thropp are expecting their first baby. Frex, a respected Unionist minister is devoted to The Unamed God. Despite the upcoming birth of their child, Frex chooses to leave to deliver his religious sermon about sinful form of entertainment instead. Shortly after, Melena goes into labour. With the help of some elderly women, Melena gives birth to a baby girl who has a strange green complexion and razor sharp teeth. The women run off completely terrified. Frex is often away on long missionary expeditions. Melena befriends a mysterious Quadling glassblower named Turtle Heart and the two secretly have an affair together. Elphaba spends much of her early years with her drunken mother, her mother’s secret boyfriend, and Nanny. Nanny worries that Elphaba should socialize with children her age. Elphaba is quite violent with other children and most children are uncomfortable around her due to the colour of her skin. Turtle Heart creates a magical mirror that can tell the future, which fascinates Elphaba. One night she wanders off and everyone finally finds her near the lake with an arcane creature, staring into the mirror that warns them all of The Wizard and the darkness he will bring. Soon after The Wizard takes over Oz and is a brutal dictator. Melana becomes pregnant with Turtle Heart’s child, a girl, named Nessarose, who also bears an abnormal deformity; she is armless.
