Gregory Mears Sr., my grandfather, was born on October 20, 1945 in Baltimore Maryland. His mother, Myrtle Elizabeth Dalton Bailey was born in Greenwood, South Carolina and father, Henry Saile Bailey was born in Baltimore Maryland. Myrtle moved to Baltimore to study nursing, however after meeting Henry she left school to raise her family. While raising his family Henry worked at Armco Steel as a steel worker. Gregory has seven brothers and sisters, Eddie, Myrtle, Matthew, Del, Mildred, Melvin, and Marie all of which were born in Baltimore Maryland. Henry died while my grandfather was a teenager. He usually didn’t go to the hospital but that day he simply had to and it was there he met the love of his life and his future wife of fifty years. Martha Janey was born on June 1, 1947 to Nancy Muriel Elizabeth Weaver Janey and William Handy Janey (whose birth certificate has the name William Robert Handy Janey). Nancy worked for the Maryland State Health Department doing research and had a part time job at a drugstore. William was a serviceman often gone serving his country (like many of the men in my family). Martha was predominately raised by her mother while her dad was away. She had several brothers and sisters, Christine, William Handy Jr., Gloria, Shelia, Kenneth, Romaine and Lennard. After obtaining her high school diploma Martha began working for the Social Security Department. While working there she was able to go to college for at least two years. He was born August 15, 1966 in Baltimore Maryland at John Hopkins Hospital, the place where is parents met. Ironically, although both his parents came from families with several children Gregory and Martha only shared one child together, my father. My grandfather did have another child, my father’s half-sister Nkeng however, he did not grow up with her. She lived with her mother and my father stayed with his parents. My father was a bookworm always reading and engaging in literature. He was also an athlete, playing sports year around – football, basketball, and baseball. While my father was growing up the age of computerization was coming to a reality, the technology was slowly changing. He witnessed the change from rotor phones to touch tone. While my father was in high school Macintosh was launched and Apple 1 was produced. Also during high school Walkman’s were common and artist such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder were becoming big. There was also a shift in fashion while my father was in school. In elementary school jeans were usually only worn to do work in, however as time progressed jeans became an item worn every day, brands like Calvin Klein and Lees began to become popular among
