The race for a new position can lead to a hostile and competitive environment. This was the case in a Grey’s Anatomy episode (season 4, episode 3) when the attending doctors were each bidding for the chief resident position. After a lengthy period of trying to impress the review board, by showing off top skills and practices a decision was made. The attending doctor considered as the underdog without a shot received the prestigious position.

This created a great ordeal of conflict within the hospital. Jealously and envy ran high amongst those who felt entitled to the position. A divide amongst the doctors was created and tasks were failing to be completed efficiently. Specifically, this resulted in a relationship conflict between Callie, who received the position and Miranda who felt entitled to the role. Because of the confident and ambitious individuals working in the hospital attitude was taken into consideration in the choice. The decision was made because the hospital needed a shift in leadership roles. In needing the help from someone who was highly respected she reached out to Miranda, in an effort to amend their relationship.
