When cocaine became so popular, local drug dealers and kingpins in the Miami-Dade area began competing for the control of selling it, rivalries between dealers became violent and deadly not only to people involved in the drug trade but also innocent bystanders. It wasn’t until 1979 when authorities saw how far drug dealers would go in order to keep power and take out any rivals. One of the more infamous drug dealers is Griselda Blanco. Griselda was was a leader in the Medellin cartel in the 80’s, she mostly operated in the Miami Dade area (Tarasiuk). She was born on February 15, 1943 in Cartagena, Colombia. She lived with her abusive mother, who would beat Griselda on many occasions. It was in this time that Colombia would be in a 10 year civil war between Colombia's Liberal Party and the Conservative Party (On War). It was during this time that the countries people were not happy with the way the government was being run. The country was run by a military dictator named General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, who ruled the country for 1953 to 1958 (On War). About 200,000 people died in the civil war and a large amount of property damage. The reason of civil war was because the government that was running the country at the time fire liberal governors and took away the basic rights of the people. Griselda grew up in a war torn country and would witness acts of violence on many occasions. This would reflect environmental psychology, the mind is being affected by their surrounding and see that as a normal thing. At the age of three she and her mother moved to Medellin, over the course of her childhood she would be constantly be beaten by her mother. There she would began doing small crimes, mostly stealing and pickpocketing. She grew up very poor and it was rather difficult to make a living in Colombia with the civil war going on.
