Originating from the old English term “grytt”, grits were first introduced by the Native American Muskogee Tribe. As inhabitants of the New World, the American Indians utilized corn to create the first known grits. This essay will provide the origination of grits and how they continue to be part of today’s Southern Culture.
Another term commonly used is “hominy grits”. After corn is dried on the cob, it is then removed and soaked until the hulls soften. Once soften, the outside of the kernels are removed and dried. Then, ground by either a stone mill or by hand, grits are created. Because corn was a staple crop for the early civilizations, many families utilized gristmills to ground their corn for them.
