Collaboration is key for a win-win scenario with Robin, Jane and Kathleen and according to Adler, Rosenfeld and Proctor II (2013), involves the consideration of not only one’s personal goals, but the goals of the group as well. This conflict style would be most effective for Robin, Kathleen and Jane because they all have some stake in the implementation of this new IT process, they could utilize everyone’s insight to gather new or creative ideas in how to help their staff, and they can show commitment to each other in order to collaborate and effectively incorporate the new IT system into their hospital. This conflict may have been avoided by following establishing some group norms in this initial meeting.
Connery and Vohs (2006) describe four phases of a group: Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. By simply diving into the issue at hand and forgoing introductions and spending some time getting to know each other’s needs, Robin, Kathleen and Jane missed an opportunity to establish better relationships and establish rules for group norms (Connery & Vohs, 2006). It is during this process that dysfunctional group behaviors should be addressed and solved, such as their incompatible goals and Robin’s resistance to preparation and participation in this group.
