Marigolds by Eugenia Collier is a short story about a teenage girl who is growing up in a shantytown in rural Maryland.This social context of this story is poverty. Lizabeth and many people in her town dealt with being poor and not having many things. The historical context is the Great Depression. The Great Depression affected many people and took jobs and made many people poor with no jobs and no money. Lizabeth is the name of the main character. The theme of this story is maturing, Lizabeth is trying to grow up, but is not yet sure of the responsibilities of growing up. She still acts childish and plays with the neighborhood children and they go around causing a ruckus but have never hurt anyone. One of the themes that connect most to me is being childish. I can relate to this because I know many people who are very childish and they don't realize that at a certain age you have to grow up. Once you reach a certain age you have to accept responsibilities and learn how to forgive people and be the bigger person and move on. Also, you can’t always rely on others to help you do everything. In my opinion, all kids should learn how to be independent at younger ages. Life is so unpredictable that you don't know when you will have to be independent. So it's better to start at a younger age so that as you grow, you won't feel confused when you have to take on adult roles. Being a child is a very great time in life, but so is growing up.As you grow up you should learn to respect people and their property. You should also be able to deal with your anger in better ways than throwing tantrums because that's very childish. So I believe that being childish is fun when your child as you grow up, you need to realize that you will be taking on bigger roles that require you to be a mature person and you can't be mad when things don't go your
