“A fabliaux is a brief comic tale in verse, usually scurrilous and often scatological or obscene.The style is simple, vigorous and straightforward; the time is in the present and the settings real, familiar places; the characters are ordinary sorts- tradesmen, peasants, priests, students, restless wives; the plots are realistically motivated tricks and ruses. The fabliaux thus presents a lively image of everyday life among the middle and lower class” (The Riverside Chaucer pg 7). In Guerin’s fabliaux of Long Butthole Berengier, he exhibits the superiority of the noble class through his characterization to contrast two characters, the usage of satirical consequences to the Lowborn Knight, and imagery to illustrate his cowardness. Having the characteristic of a prototype of matriarchy and a powerful woman in society, the Lady of Peerage is demonstrated through the story as someone of higher class. Versus throughout the satiric story resulting in a disturbing yet intriguing conclusion where we find the Lowborn Knight to actually be a coward and a liar. The way he is perceived in this story is as a joke and the farthest thing from a real man as we see him fall apart and beg at her feet on his knees which in most cases of men, they demonstrate characteristics of being stronger and inferior over women. We see the Lowborn Knight moreso cowardly than ever when he is given the option of literally kissing his wife’s butthole or battling her in a challenge.
