“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” starts out with Joey and Dr. Prentice arriving at the airport together. Joey is convinced that her parents will have no problem with her and Dr. Prentice’s relationship. John is very cautious and is weary of her parents’ reaction. He wants to break it to them gently, while Joanna is very direct with the news. Tillie seems the most upset by the news, surprisingly. Joanna’s parents had taught her while she was growing up to not be racist, and that white people were not better than black people. Joey’s mother, Christina, is initially shocked when the news is broken to her, and is not really sure what to say in that moment. Joey’s father, Matt, comes home soon after, and Joey tries to break the news to him but he is more distracted with the golf game he has scheduled. After some coercing he stays there long enough to be told the situation, and calls off his golf game. He is in shock, and has to take a few minutes with his wife to discuss the manner. John comes in to talk to the couple privately, and tells them if they do no approve, there will be no marriage.
