Guilt In John Knowles A Separate Peace

Guilt is a very powerful emotion. It can drive people to do things that they normally would never do. This is very true for Gene in A Separate Peace by John Knowles. In the book, the main character, Gene, and his friend, Finny, were going to jump off of a tree limb into a river below. But, once both Gene and Finny got onto the limb, Gene jounced the limb, causing Finny to fall off of the limb and break his leg. The reason that Gene did this is still unknown but what we do know is that Gene feels guilty for doing it and up until the point that Finny dies, Gene is trying to make it up to him in any way possible. Hence why Gene went to his house before going to The Devon School for the winter session, why Gene decided not to join the Armed Forces with Brinker. While they were walking, Finny wanted to go to the gym. After they get there, they start talking about the sports that Gene has gone out for then Gene tells Finny he hasn't gone out for any sports. After that Finny tells Gene that before he broke his leg, he was going for the Olympics. Finny tells Gene that since Finny can’t go to the Olympics, he was going to coach Gene so he could compete in the 1944 Olympics. Every morning, they got up at six and one morning, Finny had set up a course and told Gene to run it four times. He felt like his legs were about to give out after the second circuit then all of a sudden, he felt magnificent. He had found his rhythm. The only reason that Gene had done this in the first place is because he felt guilty for knocking Finny out of the tree and disabling him from achieving his dream of going and competing in the Olympics.
