Should Laws be passed to Limit Gun Ownership Further?
Some people in the USA are trying to protect the right to own fire arms while others are trying to ban them. Gun control in the United States has been a major issue in American politics over the last few years due to multiple massacres involving children. There are also different types of arguments that have been going on such as handguns, shotguns, automatic weapons, carrying a concealed weapon, requirements for ownership, or gun manufacturers changing the safety feature where it will be better. You should be allowed to bear arms for self defense, the second amendment states it, and for recreational purposes (Endersby). Citizens should be able to own firearms for self defense. If a burglar, rapist, or any kind of criminal thinks about harming someone and they see that they have a weapon, they would think twice about doing something to them. If you call the police they might not get to your location in time to be able to stop the person from harming you, therefore you will have your own way of defending yourself. Others feel that because people have weapons, then there will be more crime throughout the country. 67% of people say that they use weapons for protection against criminals. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people (Endersby). The second amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Some of the people in office are saying that the second amendment was only made so states could have the right to create a militia if they pleased. The people that agree with the amendment think that if you want the right to bear arms, then you must have training and have to legally own the weapon. The people that do not agree with the amendment say that there have been too many accidental deaths and massacres involving children such as the Columbine High School Massacre in Littleton, Colorado (Kleck). Some people have hobbies of hunting, target shooting, and other recreational purposes. Some do it professionally and put all of their time and money into it, and some just do it for fun. In South Carolina, 58% of people say that they use weapons for hunting purposes. 66% of people say that they use weapons for target shooting. 67% of people say that they use weapons for protection against criminals (Kleck). There are some groups that are for the right to bear arms. One of the many is known as the NRA or better known as the National Rifle Association. The NRA is a group that try’s to protect the Second Amendment and the promotion of firearm ownership rights as well as firearm safety, and protecting hunting and self-defense in the United States. The NRA gives firearm safety courses, as well as events based around shooting skill. One of the tournaments that the NRA holds is the Bianchi Cup which is a tournament on all shooting sports. This is
