The knowledge needed to remove metal is essential for gunsmiths, along with having the right tools for the job. If you use a file with too much grit you will end up taking too much metal off, on the other hand, it will not take long to achieve your goal. I assume, it will be a pain in the butt to replace the metal you took off. Furthermore, if you use a tool with too much grit you will end up taking a long time to achieve your goal, on the good side it will be that much harder to take to much off.
