The characters in short stories are very important. The author plays out the story through the eyes of the characters sometimes and even adds in extra noise by making characters that you don’t know much about seem important and worth finding out more. The setting is key in a short story and the conflict the characters have during the story are just as important to keep the reader interested or wanting to know more. In each story read this semester one character stood out the most from the crowd. One that started off at one extreme and at the end was to the next. One character by the name of Dmitry Gurov in the short story “ The Lady with the Pet Dog.” Dmitry Gurov, is a forty-five-year-old man who lives in Moscow, Russia. For so long he has been a man known to live one way, using women and forgetting them. Moving to the next without another thought. This was his daily life, a quick fulfillment and he was blank again till the next women came into his life. There was nothing to complicate that. Nothing or no one that made him look at himself and see any sort of flaw. Till he meets Anna Sergeyevna. In the beginning he begins the same path with her as he had done the rest. Wanting the same for her as the others. Surprisingly to him Anna excites him, he is drawn to her. The time they spend is energizing these feelings more. Gurov falling in love or catching feelings for women is very difficult for him. The conflict is within himself it seems. Dmitry thinks that once Anna has left he will forget her. He considers the memories of the two will soon fade now that she is gone. But they don’t and he falls in love he soon recognizes. This is against everything he has ever thought and sensed.
