A hero puts others before themselves, thinking naught about their own personal needs and wants. They strive to be the best they can be, even when it’s not easy. Heroes are not always the superpowered, caped protectors that come to mind. Heroes are all around us, everyday people facing everyday problems. They demonstrate mental strength in hardship, sacrifice for others, persist through adversity, and show selflessness when it counts. Because Gwen Jones from Empty by Suzanne Weyn is selfless, persistent, strong, and makes sacrifices, she fits this definition of a true hero.
One thing that makes Gwen a hero is her selflessness. An example of this characteristic is that even though she finds people annoying, she believes they shouldn’t go hungry. She pushes her own feelings aside to do what is right. This is an example of her good moral judgement. A second instance where Gwen demonstrates her unselfishness is when she anonymously gives food from the Whippersnapper 3 to the people in Sage Valley who can’t get food themselves, such as children and the elderly. One time where she shows this grit is when she is walking through the woods to the cave during the OscPearl Super Hurricane. The extreme winds and precipitation push her over. It would have been easier to just stay there on the ground, but Gwen gets up and keeps going. A second example is when she persists in trying to convince Tom to let her go on the sailing trip. She keeps telling him not to argue with her. She fights to the end, no matter how great or small the dilemma. An example of this is when she is in the underground tunnel. Instead of giving up and going back, she finds a flashlight and keeps going forward. Even when times are tough, Gwen persists, proving she is a
