The use of airplanes to spray insecticides has increased dramatically. This is because of the shift in the attitude of the handle of poison. People now believe that it is something that can be kept in a safe place that can be used for specific purposes.

The gypsy moth was accidentally introduced through migration. It was contained in a variety of methods. These methods included the introduction of parasites and predators as a means of combating the gypsy moth by natural means. It was until the Agriculture Department announced a plan to eradicate the gypsy moth entirely that they began a chemical war. Chapter 11:

Most of the contamination of the earth happens not in the massive sprayings of huge government operations but rather in the small sprayings of individuals. People are exposed to small doses of chemical poisoning, causing to their own death. Chemical poison is found in your daily household. This ranges from paper treated with insecticides to lotions to paint and varnishes. The US Department of Agriculture once encouraged the use of insecticides in home and clothing with DDT and other moth killers.

Gardening has also become another source of chemical use at home. Hardware stores and garden supplies have chemicals for all kinds of uses. The dangers of these are not made apparent since people use them haphazardly. In 1960, the Florida State Board of Health wanted to prevent further casualties by requiring people to have a permit to use insecticides in the residential area. Gardeners, however, received no warning.

People began to question their own safety as the dangers of poison within their homes became more apparent. This caused a debate throughout the nation since chemical corporations will naturally defend that their product is only meant to target a specific person rather than having the power to negatively impact
