A person taking advantage of another person while using them is called manipulative. This person that is manipulative is using others for their own benefit. In the book The Devil In the White City by Erik Larson, a character that portrays this characteristic of manipulative is H.H Holmes. H.H Holmes uses his charismatic side to have women believe he is an acceptable human being. This results in Holmes portraying himself differently in order to gather the women to kill them. Holmes doesn't have a ton of attention towards himself because people view him as innocent. Civilians all around Chicago don’t see Holmes as a dark person. He was good for being able to read people. Holmes had used this to his advantage by picking out the ones who he knew needed help. Holmes “senses vulnerability, sensed it the way another man might capture the trace of a woman’s perfume” (36). He had picked his woman by choosing the ones that were the odd ones out. The odd ones out were usually the ones that were the most breakable which made Holmes ability to have them reveal themselves was an easier process. One of Holmes ways he opened up women was by being “good with conversation, and soon she revealed to him her deepest sorrow” (37). Holmes was a man that was able to talk his way into another woman's life. He had the charisma on being able to break open another person whom he wasn’t very familiar with. He was a human being that contained the ability to use psychology in order to get on a personal level with the women. The personal level with the women had the women believe that he was trustworthy. The women opening up to Holmes had the women want to trust Holmes due to him knowing them on another level the other civilians didn’t.
