Hairball, a Minnesota native, is a hardrock, from the 1970’s and 80’s, cover band. They play music by AC/DC, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Motley Crue and many more. Hairball consist of three singers, Bobby Jensen, Kris Voxx, and Joe Dandy, a bass guitarist called freaky, a drummer known as Blake, and the lead guitarist Happy. According to Happy the band hairball began as a joke and grew into something more compelling (Lochridge 1). Hairball performs at the Iowa State Fair every year since 2003 and for the last couple years they have been performing on the Bud Light stage for two nights. They play the bands that were listed above and also Twisted sister, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Guns and Roses, Journey, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, and still many more. Since they have that wide selection of music they play different concerts each night to change it up. Hairball plays one maybe two songs of each band and then changes so that they can get 15-20 artist in a night. Happy says that since they play such a wide range of songs that if one does not like the band on stage it will quickly end and change before they know it (Coen 1). If a cover band did not play enough 80’s songs then they would not be a cover band and hairball has that covered. Some people may say that Hairball does not have a wide enough or as famous enough of a selection of music they play from the 1980’s but Hairball uses more props, costumes, and make people feel like they are at a concert from the 1980’s to compensate. Most bands Hairball recreates are not touring anymore or are dead. The Motley Crue singer Vince Neil would use his excitement to run around the stage visiting every one in the front row. Dee Snider from Twisted Sister would dress up like a messed up teenage girl. Alice Cooper’s concerts were really creepy and scary and he used a lot of props.
