Before Duvalier, Haiti had a long history. Haiti’s history started around the time that it was found by Christopher Columbus. Prior to 1492, it was inly inhabited by natives and the rest of the world did not know that it existed. Haiti was first colonized by Spain, and it remained a colony until 1697. The colony was then passed to France from Spain.
The island was used primarily for farming. Some of its main products were indigo, sugar, and coffee. Slaves were also brought from Africa to Haiti. Some were sold and some stayed on the island. In 1788 the abolishment of slavery was beginning to spread in France. In Haiti, the slave situation also got better. The slave leaders met in a congress and fought against slavery.
