Movies that involve dynamic characters are usually more successful since it can appeal to a wider audience, resulting in more people that can relate with what is being presented. The movie ‘Half Nelson’ is based on three very round and dynamic characters, which one could say is the reason that led it to be nominated for many awards. In ‘Half Nelson’ the male protagonist, Dan Dunne, is a round character because he is seen doing what can be considered both good and bad acts. For example, Dan is trying to help a student stay away from the drug business, which is ironic because he is contributing to that very business by purchasing drugs to fuel his addiction. In the movie, ‘Half Nelson’ the antagonist is Frank. Frank is seen more as a disliked person in the film with the constant flaws he presents. One example is when he is supposed to pick up Drey from school but as seen many times in the film he fails to do so. Although he does have a good side to him, he often invites Drey into his home as well as taking her out for food if he happens to bump into her. Frank is also a drug dealer which is seen a bad quality by most. Yet another quality that makes him less respectable is when he gets Drey involved in his drug deals by getting her to make the deliveries to customers. Drey is seen in a more positive attitude throughout the film but just like any other round character she too has some bad in her. An example of a good trait is when she encounters her teacher, Mr. Dunne, in the locker room high off drugs and assists him by making sure he is fine. Another example of a trait that shows her personality is when she encounters the boy that stole her bike, she is confident when confronting the boy about the incident and gives attitude showing the strong side of her. One bad quality that Drey has fallen into is when Frank got her to work for him by making his drug deals. What makes Drey dynamic is when Frank comes to pick her up for school one day and she makes the conscious decision not to associate herself with him, so she insists she rides her bike home rather than getting in Frank’s car.
