In the book, Nightfall, authored by Jake Halpern and Peter Kujawinski, a story

takes place on an island called Bliss. There are fourteen years of day and fourteen

years of night. When the sun begins to set and the earth and its island prepare for a

period of darkness the settlers of Bliss make preparations as well as rituals before the

sunsets to sail away to the south to were the desserts are which provide the new

home while the darkness lasts. Among the settlers are three teenage people. Marin a

twin sister to Kana and Line who seems to be Marin’s lover. In the preparing to leave

Bliss, Line has gone missing and only Marin and Kana know where he is. They go

and find him successfully but only return to find that they didn't make it back in time.

Line was one of the three characters who encounters a creature and is forced to

go into a instinct of kill or be killed. He quickly forgets all his worries and learns

quickly that in this new environment he must be willing to be mentally and morally

strong in order to withstand the cloaked island and its emerging inhabitants. Here on

a climb down a cliff Line combats a creature. “ But then he caught a glimpse of it.

Something was moving down the cliff. He was at the top of the seam, before it

opened up into the chimney. He froze against the wall. He needed to find a better

defensive position, but where? The chimney, of course. However, the seam that he

was climbing angled downward and did not open into the chimney for another eight

feet. The noise from overhead was getting louder. He didn't have time to inch his way

along. Instincts kicked in. I have to move. Now (Halpern & Kujawinski pg.177).” In this

scene the reader is shown a situation where the authors force the character Line to

act quickly and without hesitation. His life was on the line and his life depended on
