The economy was suffering a little due to cut off trade relations with Britain because of US sailor impressment and seizing of US ship. Religion was freely practiced during this time and people had that as a right in the Constitution. In his farewell address, Washington advised against the formation of factions and parties, sectionalism, 3rd terms, and permanent alliances that didn't already exist. Throughout the Jefferson and Madison presidencies only one of these pieces of advice were taken into consideration. The separation of parties continued with the Democratic-Republicans and Federalists, but Quids were also brought into the political system. Permanent alliances were formed as well as separation of states which led to the Civil War. The 3rd term advice was recognized and each president stepped down after their 2nd term.
