I think you did a good job with your post about the different productions of Hamlet. You broke each movie down and explained your thoughts about each one. I believe we have some similar takes on our opinions of each scene. While watching each movie clip, I was able to mentally piece together parts of each production that I enjoyed. It’s interesting how each director has their own take on Shakespeare’s classic play and how the different actors they chose bring each one to life through the lens of a movie camera. This is Shakespeare’s longest and most quoted play and it’s clear to see how it is still a well-respected masterpiece more than 400 years later. Sir Laurence Olivier did a good job in his portrayal of a pompous Prince Hamlet but I do agree with you that there wasn’t any insanity in this scene. There is not one hint of a melancholy young Prince in Gibson’s portrayal. He didn’t do such a bad job as Hamlet in the way everyone expected him to. At the time this movie came out, he was known for starring in action movies like Mad Max and Lethal Weapon. I especially enjoyed the way Hamlet delivered the line, “Ha, are you honest” with a slight laugh. I felt that it was the wrong choice to leave out the “get thee to a nunnery” speech. I feel that all the animosity he is feeling towards Ophelia at this time is really fueled by the way he says these hurtful things to her. Leaving such a quotable speech out was a major flaw in my opinion. Helena Bonham Carter’s Ophelia was too forceful for my liking. When she speaks the line, “Could beauty, my lord, have better commerce than with honesty”, she seems to say it in a condescending, menacing way. I found this to be a quality that sweet, innocent Ophelia would not
