In this blank verse speech performed by Hamlet in Hamlet, Shakespeare uses diction and metaphors to convey Hamlet’s hatred for his mother’s sinful habits and his desire for his mother, Gertude, to become pure again. Shakespeare uses opposing comparison words such as “scourge” and “minister”, “worser” and “puerer”, “devil habits” and “angel”, and “cruel” and “kind” to compare the difference between what his mother is doing or being to what his mother could be. Shakespeare also uses a lot of holy words to emphasize his desire for his mother to repent. He uses words such as “puerer”, “virture”, “angel”, “abstinence”, “blessing” and “lord”
Shakespeare also uses metaphors such as comparing his uncle to the devil, custom to a monster, and the use
