Revenge is a confession of pain. The death of a family member is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome, and at one point in everyone's life, one will confront the agony of losing someone who was responsible for one's existence. In William Shakespeare's tragic play, Hamlet, young Fortinbras, the prince of Norway ,and Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, lose their fathers, and share the same motive: to avenge their fathers’ deaths. When dealing with revenge, Hamlet hesitates and over thinks, whereas young Fortinbras acts first, and reflects about his actions later.

For instance, when Hamlet finds the perfect opportunity to kill Claudius during prayer, he reconsiders his actions: “Now I might do it. Now he is praying. And now I’ll do it. And so he goes to heaven, And so am I that would be scanned. I his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven” (Hamlet III.3.78-83). Shakespeare uses the point of view of Hamlet, by using the first-person pronouns “I, and I’ll”, to show Hamlet's unwillingness to send Claudius to heaven. Again, he portrays Hamlet’s thought process, and clearly shows that Hamlet thinks before he commits actions, when he says, “I his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven.” On the other hand, Fortinbras deals with revenge regardless of whom his actions will affect. To demonstrate, Fortinbras seeks revenge by “attacking” Poland, desiring to take his father's land back, and when Hamlet hears about Fortinbras plan, he says,“My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth”(Hamlet IV .4.9.56)! Shakespeare uses personification to emphasize Hamlet's thoughts, when he says, “My thoughts be bloody,” implying that violence is the solution. This reveals that the Elizabethan era was a religious era, and emphasized the solid faith in god, as men were required to be respectable and to overcome challenges, yet both foils are anxious to retaliate for their fathers'
