Justice and Revenge
Revenge is used as a viable tool for justice. In the Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas shows how the Count plots revenge on people who have wronged him in order to get justice for himself. In contrast, in Shakespeare's play Hamlet, the main character Hamlet desires to use revenge to get justice for his murdered father. Although this novel and play are vastly different, both men use revenge as a tool for justice. Hamlet does not fully think through his plot which results in the death of most of the main characters including himself while Dantes uses a well thought out plan to get what he desires. Dumas’ plan allows for Edmond to receive justice and revenge while Shakespeare portrays a tragic ending for the main character where justice is eventually achieved. Although revenge is used as a viable tool for justice in both plots, it comes with moral consequences.

The Count uses revenge to get justice for himself and only gives his enemies what they deserve, no more and no less. Hamlet attempts to restore honor and avenge his father’s death by using revenge for justice. Revenge in The Count of Monte Cristo is justified because there is nothing civilized about letting those who have committed wrongs to go unpunished for their actions. Revenge is a call for justice that can be solved in a civilized and moral manner. A way to make revenge civilized is to take it to the justice system because it will give the victim a sense of revenge as well as justice.
