In the first scene of the film we see Hannibal Lee Jr. as a young child playing in a field of wheat with a small wooden airplane, as he is running in the field a crop dusting biplane emerges from the distance and he begins to follow it as it flies over him. Although this scene is not an important part of the hero's journey it is still a significant scene showing us how Hannibal has been fascinated with aviation ever since he was a small child. The next scene however, is important when it comes to the hero's journey as it shows the audience how the character lives in the ordinary world. In this scene the film flash forwards to him as an adult in his room. As he is traveling on this train he meets two other African American men and they all begin to talk about being Army pilots. At this point, the audience is now aware of the destination of the cadets and the second step of the hero's journey is revealed in this scene. The “ call to adventure” as it is called is when the hero is summoned to take action and go on a journey to complete a certain task. In Hannibal's case he is called to adventure when he enlist in the Army air corp and begins his long and perilous journey. Another character that we are introduced to is an educated man by the name of Walter Peoples, played by Allen Payne, who also experiences the call to adventure in this scene and we get only minor details about his ordinary world as an aerospace engineer. The third character we are introduced to is Billy Roberts, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., he is a humorous and talkative man who begins to bond with Hannibal and Walter as the travel to the tuskegee airbase, the setting for the next step in the hero's
