Hey you know that Christmas is not the only celebrated holiday in December. There is a lot but I am only going to tell you about one and it is called Hanukkah. Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights or the Feast of Dedication is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th according to the Hebrew calendar. The festival is observed by the lights of a little thing called an candelabrum it is the nine-branched menorah, one additional light on each night of the holiday progressing to eight on the final night. The typical menorah consists of eight branches with an additional visually distinct branch. The extra light is called a Shamash and is given a distinct location.
There is a custom of eating foods fried or baked in oil to celebrate the miracle of a small flask of oil keeping the flame that was in the temple for eight days. Traditional foods include potato pancakes, known as latkes. Polish and Israeli families eat jam-filled doughnuts, which are deep-fried in oil. There is a tradition of eating cheese and other dairy products during Hanukkah. This custom reminds us that women also played an important role in the events of Hanukkah. Jewish commentators write symbols on the dreidel. After lighting the Hanukkah menorah, it is a custom in many homes to play the dreidel game.
