Some heroes wear capes, some don’t. In the case, Happy doesn’t. He’s the cool guy in school that all the girls geek over. But, he wasn’t always this awesome.He used to be shy, unhappy, artistic boy. In his original town,while Happyface’s brother, Everett come home from college for summer break , his father and mother start arguing again as usual. Meanwhile, he decides to tell his best friend, Chloe that he wants to be more and later finds out that she’s seeing someone. In the book, the call to adventure starts when his parents are thinking of splitting up. Happyface refuses that to happen because he doesn’t want to move out, his family has been together since he’s been little. But, he is a hero to ones who are scared to expand their horizon. Happyface has proven that your failures and problems should not define you. As it states in “Happyface” “My problems and failures will not stop me…. That I will smile and hold my head high.”(page 46) He used to be shy but now in this new town, he wants to change into a better person and differ himself. He’s decided being unhappy is not the right way to live his teenage life. Happyface soon meets Gretchen, the heroine. Back in the other town, Happy face didn’t have much friends, he was always shy. But he starts to hang out with her and her friends. At first, he had thought that her friends were making fun of him, as it says in the book “... They started laughing. They were most definitely laughing at me and not with me, although I laughed with them.” In the book, it quotes “ Gretchen’s Happyface nickname for me is really taking off. I AM Happyface. I’m a happy guy.”(page 55) Gretchen is really rubbing off on Happyface, as if she makes him feel like a better person
