Hardships In Slavery

During the trying times of slavery, amongst oppression and hardship, as they resisted their conditions and created their own ways of living , some of the things that slaves actually done is to try to focus on keeping their dignity, their closeness and comfort of their families , and their religion above everything else . When possible is they all tried to keep family and their community close. It was one of the things that help them to feel a little bit of comfort. In the story that was something that Harriet’s’ family was able to do. Harriet had no idea that she was a slave until her mother died when she was 6 years old. Even though in slavery men and women were both treated with equal cruelty, they were still treated differently .The men slaves that were old enough were put out in the fields to work in the scorching sun and the women were bound inside the house doing the housework . The women done all of the domestic chores like cooking ,sewing , as well as taking care of their master's children. They were sometimes even used to nurses their mistresses’ infant children so that the mother could get some sleep. If the slaves were a small female child, she was made to do small things around the house as well, like serving drinks to their masters, or cleaning up after the super had been served. As the female slaves grew older, they were give a lot more responsibilities. Even though it appeared that me slaves did the real hard backbreaking work, at least they were able to get off of their feet and rest when night came because the only jobs they had was to work the fields and come nightfall they were done, whereas the women slaves had to work all day in the household, because even though they served their masters households, some of them still had their own biological families to take care of too. And even when they were done tending to their own families they still had to go back to the house in case the master or the …show more content…
