In “The Glass Castle,” the theme of the novel is to portray that hardships are necessary to assist in our growth, development, and success. The theme is developed by revealing the point of view of a girl who’s life was sufficient for her to live as a child. But once difficulties began to reign in her life it reveals how it had affected her life at such a young age till adulthood. From the beginning of the story, her perspective of life had changed dramatically. Not only has it expanded to new things but her understanding and knowledge of handling situations began to grow. Jeannette was able to apply that experience into her life and was able to obtain a sufficient life she once had.

When Jeannette’s parents continue to fail her and their duties as her guardians, she had to take action. As Lori and their mother left Jeannette in charge of the family during the summer, she began to understand the struggle of caring for others. From trying to handle her father who continuously requested for money to satisfy his own need, managing the money to feed rest of her family and taking the responsibility of needing a job. Experiencing such issues at the age of thirteen, Jeannette was able to catch a glimpse of responsibilities taken by adults.

In “The Glass Castle,” we can acquire many lessons from the novel but I believe that the theme is that hardships are necessary to assist in our growth, development, and success. Throughout the novel, we can relate or view the hardships of each character and the impact it has on their lives. Although it may be burdensome at the moment, it won’t last forever. From each struggle they received as kids, it had built them to whom they had become in their lives. For the road may be long for everyone, but in the end, it will be a lesson worth
