Harlem Langston Hughes Analysis

In life, we all have dreams about our future life. Some of use actually makes his or her dream comes true but some of us just let that dream become a deferred dream. Langston Hughes’s poem written in 1951 “Harlem” uses similes to explain or to paint a picture of what it looks like when one puts off his or her dreams. The spear of the poem opens up with a question “what happens to a deferred dream” (1) Bizot claims that the speaker in the poem “Harlem” is just talking about a successful dream that all African Americans would what to be on the same level as the white community of the 1950s. Which states before a dream can come true it might have to sit and wait for the right moment in time. Bizot states that a dream dies to unclear priorities and bad judgment. Bizots viewpoint can be right about the poem but there is not a lot of supporting details from the poem. Bizot claims after a dream comes true it taste sweet “Or crust and sugar over/ like a syrupy sweet” (7. 8) Bizot claims that all dreams do come out sweet at the end and every time that is the case. Along with the civil rights act that soon allowed African Americans to really get a clear picture of what the American dream was truly about. The main point of the poem is talking about what actually happens to a dream that sits and dies in the corner never to be seen or even thought about. In the poem the speakers states “or does it fester like a sore” (4). When something festers, it becomes worse or intense over a long period of time to where the person is not able to deal with it. “Maybe it just sags/ like a heavy load” (9. 10) Carrying a heavy load drags a person down it takes up all of his or her energy to where that person does not want to move. Not all dreams will come out with success like starting a business for example not all dreams become a success. Bizot’s claims that the poems speaker is talking about what happens to a dream before it actually becomes successful which could be true from his viewpoint. By how hard it is for a dream to come true. Which is made of little information about the actual dreams in the 1920s through the 1960s of the many African Americans during this time period.
