In the film Stranger than Fiction, Harold’s character is shown using his wristwatch to run his structured life which symbolizes his dependency on the objects around him. In the beginning of the film Harold lives an efficient life which is tracked by his watch, after the turning point he relies to make new relationships and protect his future, and in the end of the film Harold is hit by bus which would have killed but he relies on outside factors to save his life. These events show how Harold is dependent on the objects and people around him. This is important because it shows that it’s okay to be dependent on something else to help with little tasks, however it is not okay to be obsessed with it at the same time.

The beginning of the film shows Harold living his efficient life by following his watch throughout his routines during the day, which symbolizes his dependency on the things around him. Part of Harold’s routine is waking up on time, something that is made possible by an alarm on his wristwatch, “The lanky man under the covers reaches out from underneath his modest blanket and grabs his watch. He presses one of its buttons, stopping the beeping” (AEX32). This proves that in order to start his day and follow his daily morning routine on time he is dependent
