When you think of a famous female pilot, you would probably think of Amelia Earhart, but that is not how I think. When I think of famous female pilots, I think of Bessie Coleman and Harriet Quimby. They had big accomplishments, besides being women pilots. I could go on about the history of these pilots, but I will be talking about the similarities that Coleman and Quimby had and their differences. I hope you enjoy my compare and contrast essay about Bessie Coleman and Harriet Quimby.

According to Final Approach, it states that Quimby, “ Was also the first woman to fly across the English Channel.” This is a good example of Quimby being courageous, because she would've died flying over the English channel. For example, in “Dreams of Flying” Coleman was in a plane crash in 1923. She was severely injured. This did not stop her. She was quoted to say, “Tell them all that as soon as I can walk, I’m going to fly.” She was flying one year later. Lastly, both women flew overseas. Quimby flew over the English Channel and had a terrifying emergency landing on a field in France. Coleman learned to fly in France, enrolling in a flying school there.
There is a lot of similarities about “Final Approach” and “Dream of Flying”, but there are differences about the two articles. Firstly, One big difference is the race. As an African-American, Coleman had a lot obstacles to clear. Bessie lived in Texas and had to interrupt her education by working to pick cotton to help her family survive and Bessie was not accepted to any schools in the U.S. because of her race.
