Summary of Harrison Bergeron The dystopian tale, “Harrison Bergeron”, describes a world where the government had decided mankind’s competitive tendencies had gone too far. The government then created handicaps for people that were gifted in any way. Harrison Bergeron was one of the most difficult to control, most would say impossible. Harrison was incredibly strong, he even broke the straps holding his handicaps on, straps that were guaranteed to support up to five-thousand pounds. Not only did they break “the laws of the land”, but they also broke the laws of physics, lifting themselves up off the ground and kissing the ceiling. However, this did not last long. The handicapper general, Diana Moon Glampers, came in with a loaded gun. Two shots is all it took for this fiasco to come to a screeching halt. I think that if a disease like this were to get out, the game would no longer be just a game, it would be our reality. With diseases as bad as Ebola, I think that it is entirely possible for illnesses like this to be out there. If the government were to ever get to a very chaotic state, tales such as Harrison Bergeron may become a reality, but in the organized government we have today, I don’t think it’s possible.

We are prepared currently for things to go wrong in the government, but if something were to go wrong with some sort of disease I think many dystopian tales would become a reality. This would be incredibly devastating. Our world would be in a post-apocalyptic state. There is a huge difference between post-apocalyptic and dystopian, however they are similar. Post-apocalyptic being something like The Last Of Us, or the popular show on AMC, The Walking Dead. Dystopian would be more like the popular novels The Maze Runner or the Divergent series, where instead of post-apocalyptic, where there is some tragic event causing a nightmare-ish future, it is an entirely alternate
