Relationships are something we form with every person we interact with. Sometimes these relationships last years and hold a lot of meaning, and other times they are very quick and almost have no meaning at all. In relationships, there are many different phases and stages that differentiate one point in the relationship to the next. Even though Harry and Sally had quite and odd relationship, these relational phases were still noticeable in the film. The developmental phase of Harry and Sally’s relationship beings when they first meet and Sally is going to drive Harry home from college. At this point, the initiating stage begins. Even though Harry asks Sally some deeper questions (“What’s your story?”), they are still in the “getting to know you” part of the relationship. He runs around town to find the party she is attending and when he finds her he explains everything he loves about her and says, “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” Here, Harry jumped right into the bonding stage and let Sally know that he loves her and wants to be with her. Overall, Harry and Sally had an interesting relationship. Most of the time a relationship goes in somewhat of an order of stages before getting to marriage or maybe termination.
