Harry Hess was a United States navy officer born on May, 24, 1906. He is most often the one acredit for the theory of plate tectonics. The theory of plate tectonics is that the entire surface of the is smaller pieces called plates. These pieces can consist of whole continents and ocean. They are the reasons for the formation of mountains and volcanoes and earthquakes. He first discovered this while serving as a navy officer. While on duty his job was to use sonar to measure the height of the surface of the water to the ocean floor. While doing this he noticed a difference in height. Parts of the floor were lower than the other parts. Not only did he find this out he noticed this continued in a line around 10,000 miles. This
