The name Harry Potter is a popular name worldwide, there seems to not be a single person unaware of who this special wizard is. The issue is everyone knows this name from the movies, but Harry Potter first came from a book. This book is called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. Although this book is about a powerful white male, there is a female character that stands out and makes a name for herself, and this young witch is Hermione Granger. She first appears in the novel as a very strong character, she has read all her textbooks and even tried some spells. Her biggest accomplishment was when she used “cool logic in the face of fire” (Rowling 305). Hermione was able to finish Snape’s puzzle so she and Harry can get the sorcerer’s stone. Although she is not the main character, she is an important one. In the later books her knowledge, and Harry and Ron’s need for her get shown more. Of course the powerful female is seen as a stereotypical girl character, when is a girl not seen this way? I think the character of Hermione could have been made into a larger role (not just a lead role, but the main role), for it would change the story. A female would be seen as the person who saved the world, everyone would look at her not just for her smarts but also for her power. In the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Hermione is only known for her intelligence; this is a good thing, but she is not known for anything else. On the other hand, Harry Potter is known as the brave hero when he hasn’t even done anything yet, that he remembers. If Hermione was completely taken out of the book, this would also change the story. It would once again be a male power story.
