On August 6, 1945, a city in Japan called Hiroshima was bombed. The United States bombed both Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs. This caused thousands of deaths and casualties, including radiation-induced cancers. The bombs that killed thousands of civilians were called "Little Boy" and "Fat Man." Harry Truman's critical military decision during the war changed the course of human history. The dropping of the bombs was a quick and easy way to force Japan to surrender, instead of using hundreds of thousands of American men to fight and invade Japan. This bomb would also intimidate the Soviet Union. An invasion would cost trillions of dollars and men; it could also take up to 5 years. Although this decision ended the war, it caused every
