There are consequences behind every action made. Our criminal justice system proves this to be evident. As one must understand the consequences of his or her actions. Although in the instance regarding juvenile cases, the circumstances are a bit different. Harsher repercussions are not necessary in juvenile criminal cases. I firmly believe that laws regarding juvenile crimes should provide more options for rehabilitation/deference. For example, everyone has an understanding that there is no written guide on life and mistakes will be made. Most of those mistakes are made during the adolescent period of our lives. For many to be severely punished for a mistake you made at an unsure point of your life can be very discouraging. We want to encourage our youth to be a promise for the betterment of our future, so it is our priority to prepare them for that. Rehabilitation is the proper system necessary to rebuild the tampered minds of the youth that has been swayed by the life of injustice and crime. Incarceration is made for real offenders who are of age, not teenagers that made a mistake. Many times for offenders that have been incarcerated it tends to become a cycle. Incarceration also further introduces juveniles to adults who are and sometimes continues to be victims of the system. Unlike the show, “Scared Straight”, actually living inside of a prison does something detrimental to the psyche of the juvenile, creating a “prison mentality”. This is the opposite that you want to do. These are young minds that you want to transform into blooming mind of young adults, which is what is essential to the growth of our country.
