Has Ma Bell Learned the Competition Game?!
AT&T’s roots stretch back to 1875, with founder Alexander Graham Bell’s invention century. AT&T became the parent company of the Bell System provided what was by all accounts the best telephone service in the world.
1. What are the environmental changes faced by AT&T as described in the case? How have these changes affected basic AT&T strategy?
AT&T. “Driven by its expressed desire to keep a healthy balance between business interests and environmental protection, AT&T has stated that the two interests are not necessarily inconsistent. AT&T believes that investing in the environment has helped it decrease operational costs and avoid future liabilities. As a result, AT&T has set aggressive environmental goals. For example, in 1993 AT&T reached its goal of eliminating emissions of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone- depleting substances from its manufacturing operations. AT&T achieved this goal two and a half years ahead of a worldwide ban by creating new manufacturing techniques that eliminated the use of the materials responsible for the emissions. AT&T has also achieved significant results by reducing waste, increasing recycling, and using recycled paper” (Anthony, Kacmar, & Perrewve, 2010).
